PROJECTS

MLB    Joachim Herz Program

With the start of the academic year 2009/2010, the Joachim Herz Stiftung joins the Bucerius Law School and WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management in the Master of Law and Business Program, which from now on will be known as the “Bucerius/WHU Master of Law and Business – Joachim Herz Program”. In one of its first major initiatives, the Joachim Herz Stiftung is providing financial support to the MLB Program, in order to improve even further the intense international character which the Program has already acquired. Students – especially those with a non-German academic and economic background – are encouraged to apply to become a “Joachim Herz Fellow,” which includes scholarship support. The Joachim Herz Fellows of the academic year 2009/2010 have already been appointed. They are most welcome to spend an interesting year in the beautiful harbour city of Hamburg, which besides a high-level academic education in law and economic matters, should also comprise the opportunity to pursue personal interests and to learn more about Germany, its political and economic system and its inhabitants. Information with regard to the application procedure for the next academic year will be available at www.bucerius.whu.edu in due time.

Through its promotion of the Masters study program the Joachim Herz Stiftung is realizing one of its first projects in the non-profit sector. The decision for this project is founded on numerous factors, which closely reflect the interests and conceptions of the founder, Joachim Herz. Specifically, this applies to the academic and economic orientation and the international character of the program, along with the possibility of investing directly in the promotion of people by granting scholarships for the „Joachim Herz Fellows“. We ourselves, along with the Bucerius Law School and the WHU as the academic providers of the program, are convinced that the Bucerius/WHU Master of Law and Business – Joachim Herz Program will continue in future to maintain its excellent ranking among the study programs provided internationally. The aim is to strengthen this position even further in times to come.

Excellence in Sciences / Frontiers in Quantum Photon Science

Already in its first year the Joachim Herz Stiftung sponsors a first project for the welfare of the public. Though sponsorship of local projects is not her focus, the Joachim Herz Stiftung is pleased to realise a first project together with the “Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg” as partner in the Landesexzellenzinitiative (Initiative for Excellence in Sciences of the City of Hamburg).

Since Juli 2009 the Joachim Herz Stiftung is partner of the Initiative for Excellence in Sciences of the City of Hamburg. For the time being this project is intended to last 18 month. During that period the Initiative for Excellence in Sciences will be sponsored with 16,5 mio. Euro, thereof 1,5 mio. Euro will come from the Joachim Herz Stiftung. Sponsorship for projects range from about 0,2 mio. Euro for graduate schools to 1,3 mio. Euro for clusters of excellence. The Joachim Herz Stiftung as partner of the Initiative for Excellence in Sciences sponsors the project „Frontiers in Quantum Photon Science“.

Especially the integration of various scientific institutions, the embedded graduate school and the intended research program for international scientists led to the support of the project „Frontiers in Quantum Photon Science“ by the Joachim Herz Stiftung. The scientific quality of the research program was confirmed by external experts within the selective procedure of the Initiative for Excellence in Sciences.

By supporting the Initiative for Excellence in Sciences and the project „Frontiers in Quantum Photon Science“ the Joachim Herz Stiftung intends to promote the further development of scientific institutions in Hamburg as well as to strengthen the profile of Hamburg as a city of sciences.

About the Initiative for Excellence in Sciences:
The Initiative for Excellence in Sciences aims to support scientists of the university of Hamburg, to successfully participate in the second call for tenders of the Initiative for Excellence in Sciences of the German Federal Government. Within this initiative the Joachim Herz Stiftung supports national and international outstanding research programs of highly qualified scientists of the University Hamburg to help them to qualify for continued support by the Initiative for Excellence in Sciences of the Federal Government.

About the project: „Frontiers in Quantum Photon Science“:
The project focuses on the physics with new coherent radiation sources. As the central aspect, light is used to control, manipulate and study the dynamics of fundamental quantum systems. The project combines the expertise from laser-physics, quantum optics, short-time and X-ray-physics as well as condensed matter physics. The project combines research and education by an integrated graduate school and a program for high-ranking international guest-researchers.
