Add-on Fellowships for Interdisciplinary Science and Transfer

We support up to 80 scientists from the fields of engineering, economics and life sciences who are working on innovative, interdisciplinary research projects and are motivated to further develop the transfer potential of their research.

Thematic focus “Resources of the future”

Our focus is on the thematic priority “Resources of the future” and supports in particular interdisciplinary approaches that contribute to making economic and technological resources more sustainable and efficient to use. This can include, for example, research into economic processes or new materials.

Funding

With the Fellowship, researchers receive financial and non-material support and are part of a network of young, committed scientists.

The Add-on Fellowship enabled me to conduct independent research. I was able to further my education and advance my career. For example, the publications I published during the fellowship were an important basis for my application for a junior professorship.

Prof. Dr. Janina Steinert, TU Munich

Who is the funding aimed at?

The funding is aimed at excellent researchers in the early stages of their careers - including doctoral students, postdocs and junior professors. In addition, researchers must be employed at a university or non-profit research institution in Germany at the time of application or their research must be otherwise funded there.

What is supported?

Funding is available for scientists working on interdisciplinary research topics of social relevance in the field of “Resources of the Future”. Depending on the discipline, this connection can be established in different ways. It is important that the projects already show transfer potential, even if concrete transfer goals are not yet or only slightly developed.

Is there a restriction in terms of content?

We provide funding in four disciplines: Business administration, economics, life sciences and materials science.

What does the funding include?

Fellows receive funding of up to 15,000 euros for two years. The funding can be used flexibly. For example for:

  • Travel costs and participation fees for research stays, conference visits, further training or other research-related events (including fellowship meetings),
  • Acquisition of special aids (e.g. hardware or software), data acquisition or collection,
  • Measures to further develop the transfer potential,
  • Funding for own scientific conferences, activities in science communication.

If your application is successful, you can apply for additional funding of up to 3,000 euros for equal opportunities. This is intended to make it easier to reconcile work and family life, for example when looking after children or caring for relatives. Other special needs, for example due to a disability, can also be taken into account based on the DFG criteria.

Ideal support:

  • Kick-off meeting: getting to know and networking with fellows and alumni of the Joachim Herz Foundation,
  • Add-on meetings for transfer sensitization, preparation for the academic and non-academic job market and science communication,
  • Resources and support for self-organized regional chapter meetings on various topics such as transfer, spin-offs, mental health, publication strategies and exchange.
